Raptor extend their winning streak

The Raptors extended their winning streak to eight games as they started 2014 intent on pursuing a serious challenge for the England basketball Division 3 title. The Raptors faced Sefton Stars who were lying 3rd in the league, just ahead of the raptors by points difference coming in the Christmas break. Sefton are a talented side boasting four former British Basketball League players including the new signing of 6’7 Daniel Pilkington.

The game started poorly for the Raptors who found themselves behind by 10 early, but they dragged themselves back into it by the end of the first quarter with some solid defence from youngster Conor Porter and the experienced and skilful attacking play of Steven Gayle.

In the second quarter, improved team offence, and some individual magic from Papis Samb gave the Raptors a slight lead going into half time. Papis had his best game for the Raptors to date scoring 11 points all at critical moments and playing some impressive defence against Seftons very best players.

The game continued to be closely fought right the way through the 3rd and fourth quarters. A mini run in the fourth quarter led by Gayle and Porter, gave Raptors a seven point lead, their largest lead of the game with about 2 minutes to play. But Sefton came steaming back with two long range three point shots from Brandreth. Following some confusion about the clock Sefton had possession with three seconds remaining. They managed to get off a three point attempt that luckily for the Raptors didn’t fall and Rossendale came away with a 2 point win 79-77.

Steve Gayle scored 25, Conor Porter 13 and Papis Samb 11.
