Rossendale Raptors chairman Ken Masser says it will be fitting for the club to win National League promotion in their 50th anniversary year.
The Haslingden Sports Centre-based club have had four promotions on the trot, having moved up from the North West leagues into the National League Division Four.
They currently top that table and, if they move into the National League Division Three next season, they will be just three tiers below the British Basketball League – which is teh equivalent of the Premier League in football.
"2012 is the club’s 50th anniversary year having been formed in 1962 and a National League title would be a great way to celebrate," said the chairman, who has played a major part in transforming the club into a force to be reckoned with in UK basketball.
This season, the Raptors have won 12 games in a row having last lost in November and, with two promoted this season barring an almighty fall, they look destined to go up.
With experienced heads like former Manchester Magic stars Steve Gayle and Aitor Estraba in the ranks this season, there is no stopping the Rossendale side with six games to go.
"We are feeling pretty comfortable at the moment," said the chairman.
"We have only lost two games this season and I think our big game will be the penultimate match of the season when we travel to Stockport which could be the title decider. We have beaten the six teams we have left to play and we fit the criteria to be in National League Three so it is all go.
"It has been a remarkable time for the club.
"We have been promoted every year for four years, from the North West League into the National League – the highest league we have been in – and we are still a growing club."
The Raptors are hoping to keep hold of the league’s star player in Gayle.
"He is committed to the club for next year but it does depend on if Manchester Giants reform next season and they want him back as he enjoyed his time there," continued the chairman.
"But Steve chose this club because of our set-up and our ambitions and we are hopeful he will stay.
"For the rest of the players, a lot have come through the ranks together here and we have five of the 12 from the Rossendale area – and added the likes of Gayle, Estrada and John Slabu for their experience and extra quality and it is working so far.
"We also have more coming through the ranks as we start at under-sevens and we are keen to make this a community club."
The chairman doesn’t plan on stopping there as he has big aims for the future of the Rossendale Raptors.
He said: "I want to get them to National League Division One and I would love to get our own premises rather than play at Haslingden Sports Centre all the time.
"It would be great if Marl Pits could be turned into a sports village and we could be housed there.
"That would be a dream for us."
